Remarks by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Consulate General in Melbourne
2020/04/09

Recently Mr. Bernie Finn, Liberal Member for Western Metropolitan Region of the Victorian Parliament, launched a series of malicious attacks against China’s endeavors to combat the COVID-19. It is particularly appalling that he brazenly insulted the Chinese national flag and the Chinese people. He has distorted facts, smeared and slandered the Communist Party of China and the Chinese Government, which fully exposes his bigotry, ignorance and sinophobia. Such rhetoric has crossed the bottom line of civilized society and morality. The Chinese Consulate General in Melbourne expresses its firm opposition and strong condemnation to it.

As is known to all, the CPC and the Chinese Government always place people’s life and security above anything else. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, the Chinese Government has adopted the most comprehensive, thorough and rigorous measures of prevention and control at the earliest time possible and the whole country has been working together to fight the disease. By doing so, China has bought precious time for the global response and built a strong defense line against the spread of the epidemic. China has taken strong measures to contain the outbreak within the country and prevented its spread to other parts of the world, not only protecting the Chinese people, but also safeguarding people around the world.

As is known to all, China has attached great importance to international health cooperation. The Chinese Government has released information related to the disease in an open, transparent and responsible manner, worked closely with the WHO, neighboring countries and other countries concerned, including sharing experience in epidemic prevention and control, and providing assistance within its capacity. China’s concrete actions have been widely recognized and appreciated by the world, and again demonstrated its firm commitment to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

As is known to all, with more than 90 million Party members, the CPC comes from the Chinese people and has inseparable ties with the people. The CPC puts the interests of the people first, firmly relies on the people and wholeheartedly serves the people. The people is the greatest source of power and confidence for the CPC as the ruling party. China’s modern and contemporary history has forcefully and indisputably proven that every step forward taken by the Chinese people can’t be achieved without the CPC. In the face of this unprecedented challenge of the COVID-19, the Chinese people of all ethnic groups have united as one and launched a massive, nation-wide response under the strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee with General Secretary Xi Jinping at its core. The heroic acts of the Chinese people in fighting the epidemic have won admiration and support from the international community. Any attempts to negate the ties between the CPC and the Chinese people are nothing but exposé of ignorance and prejudice, and are doomed to fail.

In a way, the epidemic is like a mirror that exposes one’s morality and character. The virus knows no ideology, border or race. In face of the epidemic, the destinies of all countries are closely intertwined. Slander and blame game are of no avail. Only through solidarity and cooperation can we prevail over this epidemic.
